The foundation of Parents and
Guardians' Association of Profoundly Deaf and Hard of
Hearing Children in Thessaloniki
|

|
The Parents and Guardians' Association
of Profoundly Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children was
founded in 1985 in Thessaloniki. A small number of
parents with PD and HH children, clearly dissapointed by
the functional framework of the existing institutions and
having a completely different scope for the future of
their children, founded the Association and set out their
goals.
The initially small team of 1985, has now became a
distictive foundation that offers its' services to a
range of PD and HH children between 3-21 years of age.
In order for the pre-mentioned to take place, teamwork,
realism and optimism were out together. These parents
organised an action plan having as a core idea, faith in
the creativity and the personality of PD and HH
children.The actions taken were:
1) Creation of two integrating-parallel classes for PD
and HH students in the 38th Primary School. Similar
classes were also established in the 51st and 94th
Primary Schools. In order for more needs to be covered
the 10th hard of hearing special school was created.
2) Creation of support classes for the PD and HH students
in the high school (gymnasium) and Senior highschool
(lyceum) of the "Malakopi" area of
Thessaloniki. In this school, the mainsrteam daily
syllabus is attended by the PD and HH students, in
addition to supportive tutoring to the core modules such
as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry Modern Greek e.t.c.
3) Creation of an integrative Nursery class for PD and
HH- mainstream children.
4) Creation of two supportive centres premised in
"PIKPA" (Hellenic initials for:Patriotic
Institution of Social Approach and Provision) of the
districts HARILAOU and TOUBA in Thessaloniki. The special
facilities of the pre-mentioned supportive centres are:
a) Department of Speech-Therapy, in which speech
improvement is attended.
b) Department of Music-Therapy, where the trainer's
objective is to give life to the speech of PD and HH
children and youths.
c) Department of action- dance where the where the
trainer's objective is to improve the children's voice
tones through out rhythm in movement.
d) Department for measuring hearing aids where audio
measurements are performed by special equipment and
computer programmes. Using these techniques the
selection, control, implementation and regulation of the
suitable hearing-aid is a succeded.
e) Data collection and filling system for every PD and HH
child in order for us to control its' progress.
This centre was established since the parents understood
throughout various debates with specialists that, the
improvement of speech for the PD and HH children becomes
better and faster if:
1) Valid and immediate diagnosis is performed regarding
the extent and type of deafness.
2) Implementation of the suitable hearing-aid is
performed for each child according to every individual
case.
3) Perfectly equipped places exist, for the individual
and general training of the PD and HH children.
4) Special consultancy is provided to the families of the
PD and HH children.
To end with, the Association visualises the future of PD
and HH children with concern about employment and
stability for them.
A European programme EU-(HORIZON 98-99) is already moving
through the same direction. The HORIZON will
occupationally train and support 10 PD and HH youths aged
from 18 years.
